September 18th and 29th, 2015 – Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada – Scenery for every occasion……
Northern Night
September 20th-28th, 2015 – Newfoundland Canada – Finally, some skies clear of both light and smoke. Enough so I’ve been able to play with the camera on some cold crisp nights. So that I have a few pictures to share of what I see looking up into the darkness.
Traveling so far away from dense population……
Eclipse Over Newfoundland
September 28th, 2015 – Codroy Newfoundland – The weather had been really windy with a deep layer of clouds right up until an hour or so before the eclipse on September 28th. The forecast had been calling for clearing just about local midnight, right when the total eclipse was due to end. But the clouds……
Gros Morne National Park (2 of 2) – Tablelands
September 26th, 2015 – Gros Morne NP, NL Canada – The Tablelands is worth a visit. This area of Gros Morne National Park in Newfoundland is a bronze barren section of the earth’s mantle left exposed as tectonic plates have drifted. The relative lack of vegetation and the unusual color make it feel otherworldly.
Cape Spear – Newfoundland
Newfoundland Ferry
September 20th & 28th, 2015 – Nova Scotia to Newfoundland Ferry – I finally had convinced myself that I should take the ferry to Newfoundland. Good thing as Newfoundland was a highlight to me akin to northern Alaska. And, the word ferry describes the purpose, but probably doesn’t conjure up the picture of these huge……
Green Gables National Heritage Place
September 16th, 2015 – Prince Edward Island – The Green Gables National Heritage Place – as the fictional……
Pardon Me, Just Passing Through
September 12th-15th, 2015 – New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island – New Plans! Fall colors are late this year and Maine isn’t far enough east. So I am bound for the Maritime Provinces of Canada, then coming back for the fall colors.
When I was in Alaska I decided I should……
Watkins Glen (Vintage Cars plus Scenery)
A Taste of Pittsburgh
September 8th-10th – Pittsburgh, PA – A good friend from scouting has been working remotely from Pittsburgh for several years now, and I wanted to drop by and say hello. He gave me a grand tour and we shared a great dinner at his treat. A little lesson in geography and a stay at a……
Rolling Past ‘Home’
September 6th-8th – Michigan and Ohio – The trailer was built in southeast Ohio, and that’s where we’re heading next. South over the Mackinac Bridge, down through Michigan I passed through Frankenmuth. Now into Ohio, a couple days at Maumee Bay near Toledo, bought gas for the low price of $1.81/gal, then south past the……
Where the Lakes Meet
September 2nd-6th – North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan – “Proceeding generally Eastward.” I dropped in at several visitor’s centers, talked with people, looked at maps, and read lots of literature. In the end however I looked at a map and decided I would head for “the place on the map where three of the……
Fort Pierre National Grassland
September 2nd, 2015 – Fort Pierre, SD – Sunflower fields, foggy farmlands, and control over headlights were my rewards. So far in my eastward trip I felt like I hadn’t been “camping” enough, just staying at developed campgrounds. The web site for Fort Pierre National Grassland suggested that dispersed camping was allowed within……
Needles Highway
Wind Cave National Park
September 1st, 2015 – Black Hills, SD – When I stumbled onto the Iron Mountain Highway I was really just headed towards Wind Cave National Park, and the campground there. I finally arrived at dusk, saw a ranger talk, and spent the night. In the morning I did a quick walk through of the visitor’s……
Iron Mountain
Mount Rushmore
August 31, 2015 – Mount Rushmore, SD – I hadn’t visited Mount Rushmore since I was about 12 years old. So another stop was due. I chose to take the scenic route through the mountains rather than get back on I-90 and bypass it all. It did take a bit longer, but I enjoyed both……

Yellowstone (5 of 5) – Other Animals
August 24-30, 2015 – Yellowstone – This is Yellowstone post number five, “Other Animals”. Elk, pronghorn, fish, wolves, sheep, deer. Yellowstone is a great place to see wildlife. Little guys like chipmunks and squirrels are everywhere and like the birds are very interesting to watch, always active, always doing something.
Yellowstone (4 of 5) – Bison
August 24-30, 2015 – Yellowstone – This is Yellowstone post number four, “Bison”. The American Bison, or as we used to say “Buffalo” is the big guy on the plains. The first one you see you will take a lot of photos, but two things I can guarantee, you will see another, and I……
Yellowstone (2 of 5) – The Tour
August 24-30, 2015 – Yellowstone National Park – (Above: Geyser under the moon) While traveling the grand loop I had my eye out for the little side trips. This resulted in heading along some less traveled roads, since I didn’t have the trailer in tow. And with a bit more attention to the north side……
Yellowstone (1 of 5) – Old Faithful Area
Wandering in Yellowstone there is always something new playing out in front of you. I love the variety and the complexity. This trip I spent six days in the park. For the blog, I have divided it up into five themed posts. This is number one, “Old Faithful Area”. It focuses on the upper geyser……
West Yellowstone – Finally a Grizzly?
August 26th, 2015 – West Yellowstone, Montana – I arrived in the Yellowstone area early on the 24th. That day and the next I explored the west side including Old Faithful. Frustrated by overloaded networks in the park, I took a quick trip back out to West Yellowstone on the 26th. Suffering similar frustration for……
